HELLO FROM THE MOORSThis week in Pub & Property: a granite lodge tucked into Dartmoor with everything I dream about — history, character, space to breathe. It’s got the bones of a grand old home but feels warm and lived-in: wood burners, a garden room with moorland views, a proper kitchen for gathering. There’s a guest cottage, an art studio, a greenhouse, stables, and even a tennis court hidden in the trees. The home is neslted in the heart of Dartmoor National Park just 21 miles from Exeter. Absolutely gutted this one’s not mine—this is the dream countryside home.
Thornworthy House is a granite-built former sporting lodge (circa 1840!) nestled in the heart of Dartmoor National Park. Think wild moorland views, winding tree-lined drive, and total seclusion without feeling cut off.
This type of property captures everything we’re about here at Pub & Property —period charm everywhere you turn, with tall sash windows, open fireplaces, and rooms that spill out into the gardens. You can imagine long summer evenings outdoors and long chilly winter nights cozied up by the fire.
The house itself is nearly 5,000 sq ft and beautifully done. The kitchen is pure country perfection: AGA, pizza stone, island for casual breakfasts, and space for actual family meals.
There’s a snug, dining room, and a grand drawing room with bay windows overlooking the moor.
And don’t get me started on the garden room — vaulted timber ceilings, panoramic views, and a wood burner for winter afternoons.
There are 7 bedrooms across the main house, including aN elegant principal suite.
Bonus points for the converted cellar (currently a treatment room but could be a teen den or cinema) and a charming conservatory connecting the living spaces to the garden.
But here’s what takes it next level:
A guest cottage and a converted Bothy that match the style and finish of the main home.
A round house and summer house, both with wood burners.
A full all-weather tennis court.
A paddock with stables, tack room, field shelters, and over 4.4 acres of landscaped gardens and grazing.
The kitchen garden is straight out of a magazine — with raised beds, a greenhouse, and an orchard. You’ll also find garaging, tool sheds, log stores, a chicken coop, and a pond frequented by wild ducks.
And it’s not just about the house: you’re less than 3 miles from Chagford (arguably one of the best little towns on the moor), and only 21 miles from Exeter if you need city energy.
![]() The Cricketers Pub, Saffron Walden PUB RECWe went for a short getaway on bank holiday weekend and discovered this gem of a pub. You might miss the wisteria season — but it’s definitely one to add to your list. It had both the cozy, creaky feel of a historic pub and the chic elegance of an upscale gastropub. | ![]() Botany Beach, Kent GETAWAY INSPOThe bank holidays and longer, warmer days have us in the mood to plan some weekend getaways. This week we enjoyed a lovely getaway to Broadstairs, just an hour 20 from St. Pancras. Blown away by how many great restaurants, cafes, and views we found. We had the most fabulous lunch as an Italian restaurant, called Possillipo. |
Sydney Place, Bath REAL ESTATEThis listing from Bath is another one that I’ve not stop thinking about. The LIBRARY. Full stop. “What makes me really happy is a walk in the English countryside. A nice sunset, that British countryside - it means I'm home.”
